6 Tips To Organize Your Closet

Most people want a picture perfect closet. In reality, picture perfect closets don’t stay that way. So how do you organize your closet in a way that looks nice and still is functional?

6 Tips To Organize Your Closet

Declutter

No, I am not telling you it’s time to buy a whole new wardrobe, rather, it’s time to get rid of clothing that you have not worn in a while or will no longer wear. This will give you a whole lot more space to work with and you won’t have to worry about wasting your time organizing clothes that you’re not going to wear.

Make sure you have either a box, bin, or bag nearby to hold items that you will either donate or discard. For more on decluttering check out my blog “How To Declutter”.

TRY THIS: When its time to organize your clothing hang your clothes on the hanger backwards. When you wear that particular item and put it back in your closet, hang it correctly on the hanger. Whatever you don’t wear will still be on a backwards hanger and after 6 months to a year, if it’s still like that, that means it’s time for you to let it go.

Organize Into Zones

Depending on the size of your closet you may have separate sections that you can easily organize similar clothing together. Or you may share a closet with your roommate or spouse which will make space limited.

Regardless of your situation or size of closet, organizing according to likeness or zones, will help keep you not only organized but functional. And like I mentioned earlier, when things are functional they will stick.

So keep shirts with shirts, pants with pants, and so forth. This allows you to create zones. I have a small closet and that’s how I hang my clothes.

To make it fun for me when hanging, for example my shirts, I like to hang them in order from short sleeves to long sleeves. You can even do it by color. Create your own fun function!

Put Your Dresser In Your Closet

I’ve always wanted a closet where I could do this. I just love the look of it! This is an inexpensive way to have the “built-ins” look without spending the “built-ins” money.

You can store your jeans, shirts, or any extra seasonal items like your sweaters, gloves or scarves. If you don’t have a dresser you could use a cube storage organizer.

TIP: Fold what you can! That will allow you to have more room to hang up clothing that can’t be folded. If you can’t fit a dresser use a wire drawer organizer.

Over The Door Shoe Organizer

What can I say about shoes! There are so many styles to choose from that we feel we need them all. But can our closet hold them all? With this tip it can!

If you don’t have much floor space an over the door shoe organizer will do wonders for you. By freeing up the little amount of floor space you have you will be able to use that for any extra storage you need.

If you don’t like that idea then stick with your traditional shoe rack or shoe boxes that allow you to store your shoes right on top of each other if you prefer a more aesthetic look. This allows you to take advantage of the vertical space.

Use Bins Or Dividers

You can find them anywhere, online or your local store. Bins do such a wonderful job to keep your clothes organized and they’re handy for those random earmuffs or gloves. You can label them so you know what is where. You can use ones with lids so that you are able to stack them and store them anywhere you like. Bins really do help to organize a closet making it look clean rather than cluttered.

Do A Seasonal Purge

At the end or start of every season go through your clothing, it doesn’t have to be heavy duty. Think of it as maintenance!

Get rid of or donate clothing you have not worn or just don’t like anymore. Maybe your style has changed or you no longer work in the office, so certain clothing items are not needed. This will not only allow you to keep your wardrobe fresh but it will cut down on the time it would take to have to reorganize your whole entire closet.

Like I said earlier, big or small we all need to organize our closets. It will cut down on the time we spend looking for clothes and the money we spend on buying new ones since we will know what we have.

I hope these 6 tips will help you organize a closet. Let me know which ones worked for you!
